Let's Look Around
About this time that old Roman god, Pluto, must have
decided that he did not approve of the use of his name
for the new element being manufactured by Richland people.
At any rate, he or someone else with influence, persuaded
that other mythological deity, Jupe Pluvius, to make it rain
copiously along the headwaters of the Columbia and this,
plus melting mountain snows brought the threat on an unruly
river to our door. Then just after the new two-lane, threstle-
type bridge over the Yakima River was finished, the predicted
flood waters arrived. The main high-way connection Richland
with the "outside world," despite all efforts to the contrary,
was severed so that neither the new bridge nor the old one
paralleling it could be used.
For weeks all the resources at hand were thrown into the
desperate battle to keep flood damage to a minimum. Most of
the Village was not threatened with inundation, being situated
on relatively high ground, but a miraculous mile-long dike
prevented excessive damage to community facilities.
